Welcome to Moon Rabbit Writing Studio!

A Safe Place for Creative Joy

I named Moon Rabbit Writing Studio after my favorite Buddhist Jataka Tale. It goes like this:

Once upon a time, a long time ago, an otter, a monkey, a jackal, and a rabbit were best buds. Tara (the femme version of Buddha) wanted to see this friendship in action, so she descended to earth disguised as an old lady (like gods do). She met the animals and told them she was hungry. Like the good Asian kids they were, the otter brought her fish, the monkey brought her fruit, the jackal killed something for her (a lizard, I think?) and also stole a bowl of curds. The rabbit saw all this and totally panicked. She thought she had nothing to offer - I mean, you can’t exactly feed old-lady-gods-in-disguise wildflowers and timothy hay - so she told Tara, “Since I have nothing to bring you, I’ll throw myself into the fire. You can eat me!”

Well, when she heard this, Tara, a woman of color, was like, “Nope nope nope nope nope absolutely not nope.” She could see that the rabbit would just keep on sacrificing herself over and over again until she died. So, to keep her safe, Tara made the rabbit a home on the moon. She figured that out in space, no one would ask anything of rabbit ever again. To this day, you can see rabbit out there in the sky, rolling in moon dust, anti-gravity hopping, and generally having an amazing time.
